Julich-Berg SB819-20609r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20609 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Julich-Berg. Taler, 1570. Wilhelm V. PCGS AU-58 Gold Shield. A RARE type that possesses far superior surfaces to those seen in archived auction results, so much so that had it graded Mint State, one could have hardly found objection. As it is, likely assigned its grade due to some characteristic softness in the strike as well as a small planchet flaw on Wilhelm V's cheek. Otherwise, the surfaces remain fairly close to as-made with bold luster, virtually no tone and only trivial forms of handling. Sure to become a key target for the advanced Taler collector as such. From the Linda Collection." The duke of Berg, also duke of Cleve and Julich, count of Mark and Ravensberg, ruled a substantial territory in the lower Rhineland surrounding the archbishopric of Cologne. This type was issued 1570-73. When the last duke died in 1609, Brandenburg and Pfalz fought a war over the legacy and in 1624 partitioned it, an opening act of the Thirty Years War.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-8934.
