This specimen was lot 4304 in Goldberg sale 70 (Los Angeles, September 2012), where it sold for $46. The catalog description[1] noted, "Japan. 50 Sen, 1914. Taisho-3. ANACS graded AU-53." This type was struck in Tokyo 1913-17 and, while it is not rare, the lucky purchaser of this lot got a bargain. The fifty sen was 13.48 g until 1905, then 10.13 g during 1912-17, then 4.95 g during 1922-38 and brass thereafter.

Recorded mintage: 1,872,331.

Specification: 10.13 g, 0.800 fine silver, .260 troy oz ASW.
