Japan 1887 (M20) sen
This specimen was lot 75347 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "JAPAN. Sen, Year 20 (1887). Osaka Mint. Mutsuhito (Meiji). NGC MS-64 Brown. Toned deep violet and indigo with the warmth of original mint red in certain areas, this magnificent and brilliant Sen presents strong eye appeal. Fields are glossy and brilliant, providing a semi-prooflike contrast against frosted devices. The sole finest NGC has certified for the Brown color designation." This type was struck 1880-92 in large numbers and is common in circulated condition. This weight standard was used until 1915.
