This specimen was lot 30138 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $3,995. The catalog description[1] noted, "Meiji gold 5 Yen Year 3 (1870) MS65 NGC, Osaka mint. Drenched in effulgent luster, with few marks as the grade suggests and a strong strike that completes the design. A vastly popular one-year type, with 12 graded at the MS65 level by NGC, and 13 graded finer." This type of 1870-71 is very rare despite the substantial mintage, suggesting that most were melted by the government and never issued. The diameter was reduced to 21.82 mm in 1872.

Recorded mintage: 273,536 for 1870-71.

Specification: 8.33 g, 0.900 fine gold, 23.84 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Fr-47; KM-Y11.
