This specimen was lot 72411 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "JAPAN. 20 Sen, Year 3 (1870). Mutsuhito (Meiji). PCGS MS-66 Gold Shield. Shallow scales variety. An entrancing plus Gem, featuring flawless surfaces radiating with brilliance and a peripheral cobalt and magenta tone. Incredibly attractive." This type was struck 1870-71. The shallow scale and deep scale varieties are priced about the same. A revised twenty sen, of increased weight, was struck 1873-1900.
