This specimen was lot 1199 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "JAPAN. 2 Yen, Year 3 (1870). NGC MS-65. High luster, some toning." This type was struck 1870 only and is scarce tho not rare like the larger denominations such as the ten yen. A few more were struck 1874-80 and then the denomination was abandoned.
Recorded mintage: 883,293.
Specification: 3.33 g, 0.900 fine gold, 17.5 mm diameter.
