Italy 1924-R lira
This specimen was lot 71124 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Lira, 1924-R. NGC MS-64. These pieces weren't officially coins (though minted in Rome by government authorization) but 'good for' tokens issued to retire paper money printed during World War One. They are accompanied by nickel two lira and fifty Centesimi. They served the same purpose [as] the French aluminum bronze "Chamber of Commerce" tokens issued at the same time; to delay acknowledgment of the collapse of the lira." This type was issued in large numbers 1922-24 but mintages for 1926-35 were for presentation only, much like the twenty lire. The SCWC only lists these late issues in uncirculated.
Recorded mintage: 29,288,000.
Specification: 8 g, nickel, 27 mm diameter, with reeded edge.
Catalog reference: KM-62; Mont-206.
