Italy 1924-R 2 lire
This specimen was lot 3349 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 35 € (about US$45 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Italia. 1924. Víctor Manuel III. R (Roma). 2 liras. Ex Artemide Aste 27-28/02/2021, nº 1061. Escasa así. NI. EBC [extremely fine, scarce thus]." This type was struck for the kingdom of Italy 1923-35. Vittorio Emanuele III succeeded his father Umberto upon the latter's assassination in 1900, but by 1924 he had yielded to the Fascists, whose symbol appears on the reverse. The issues of 1923-26 are readily available but those of 1927-35 are rare, being struck for presentation only.
