This specimen was lot 1470 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Lira, 1861-F. NGC AU-55. Dark toned. From the Demarete Collection." This is one of the first issues of the kingdom of Italy, newly organized in 1859-61. It was struck in Florence. Later issues were emitted from Turin, Milan and Naples. As this type was not issued after 1867, none came from Rome, added to the kingdom in 1870.
