Ireland 1942 shilling

formerly in the Mountain Groan Collection

The first Irish shillings, issued 1928-37, featured the obverse legend "SAORSTAT EIREANN"; this type, issued 1939-42, merely stated "EIRE." The subsequent and final type (KM 14a), issued 1951-68, was copper-nickel. Irish shillings appear more often than any other silver denomination of the 1928-42 period.

Recorded mintage: 286,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 5.65 g, 23.6 mm diameter, 0.750 fine silver, .136 troy oz ASW.
