Ireland 1942 florin

formerly in the Mountain Groan Collection

The first Irish florins (= two shillings), issued 1928-37, featured the obverse legend "SAORSTAT EIREANN"; this type, issued 1939-43, merely stated "EIRE." The subsequent and final type (KM 15a), issued 1951-69, was copper-nickel. The reverse depicts a salmon, a fish common in Irish rivers.

Recorded mintage: 109,000.

Specification: 11.31 g, 28.5 mm diameter, 0.750 fine silver, .272 troy oz ASW, designed by Percy Metcalfe.
