This specimen was lot 21099 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRAN. 5 Pahlavi, SH 1340 (1961). NGC MS-65. WINGS Approved. Mintage of only 2,430 pieces. Soft satin luster." This type, struck SH 1339-1353 during the reign of Muhammed Reza Shah (r. 1941-79), was minted to the standard of a British five pounds. Gold one, 2½ (Fr-100) and ten pahlavis also exist. The coins generally trade as bullion coins.
