Iran AH 1296 5000 dinars

from Steve Album sale 45, lot 1271

This specimen was lot 1271 in Stephen Album sale 45 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2023), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description^[1] noted, "IRAN: Nasir al-Din Shah, 1848-1896, AR 5000 dinars, Tehran, AH1296, plain edge, with the rays extending to the left of the lion's head, semi-prooflike surfaces and presumably a very early strike from new dies or possibly even a specimen strike, traces of light surface hairlines, About Unc, RR." One thousand dinars made a kran and ten kran made a toman. The largest silver coin was the five krans. This scarce type was struck AH 1296-1297 along with a gold 5000 dinars (Fr-56).
