Sincona sale 92, lot 63

This specimen was lot 63 in Sincona sale 92 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 24,000 CHF (about US$33,264 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN Zand Dynasty, Ja'far Khan, 1199-1203 AH (1785-1789). Mohur Ashrafi 1202 AH (1787/1788), Shiraz Mint. Äusserst selten, Prachtexemplar mit feinem Prägeglanz, NGC MS66, Extremely rare, Cabinet piece with nice mint luster. Purchased from A. Shams, Frankfurt, in 1986. Finest certified by NGC."

Wikipedia comments, "Jafar Khan Zand, (Persian: جعفر خان زند) was the seventh shah (king) of the Zand dynasty of Iran from 1785 to 1789. He was the son of Sadiq Khan Zand, who was removed from the throne in Shiraz by Ali Murad Khan, who had previously taken Isfahan for himself." Shiraz was the sole mint for this denomination under this ruler. This rare type was struck AH 1199-1202.
