Iran AH 1205 1/4 mohur KM-579
This specimen was lot 131 in Sincona sale 88 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$1,982 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"IRAN, Zand Dynasty, Ja'far Khan, 1199-1203 AH (1785-1789). 1/4 Mohur Ashrafi 1205 AH (1791, posthumous), Shiraz Mint. Äusserst selten; Extremely rare. NGC MS64. Purchased from A. Shams, Frankfurt, in 1988."
Ja'far Khan was the son of Sadiq Khan and succeeded Ali Murad Khan in 1785. He was the last ruler recognized by all the Zands but he could not overcome the encroaching Agha Mohammad Shah of the Qajars. His death in 1789 set off another struggle for the succession, resolved in 1796 by Qajar triumph. The Shiraz mint struck this coin AH 1201-1203 and is the sole mint for the type. We don't know who risked the wrath of Agha Mohammad Qajar in striking this type after Ja'far's death.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.88 g, gold, this specimen 2.73 g.
