Sincona sale 88, lot 125

This specimen was lot 125 in Sincona sale 88 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 600 CHF (about US$793 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"IRAN, Zand Dynasty, Karim Khan, 1166-1193 AH (1753-1779). 1/2 Mohur Ashrafi 1191 AH (1777), Basra Mint. Äusserst seltene Münzstätte; Extremely rare mint. NGC MS62. Purchased from A. Shams, Frankfurt, in 1987."

Karim Khan was the founder and the only effective ruler of the Zands. The Zands besieged and occupied Basra in Iraq during 1775-79 and briefly operated a mint there. This rare type is listed for AH 1190 only.
