Indonesia gained independence from a reluctant Netherlands in 1949. Being a scattered series of islands with differing traditions, Indonesia has struggled to remain a cohesive nation. The coin shown is an copper-nickel 100 rupiah, featuring a traditional style house. There is also an Aluminum Pattern of the same denomination, design and date (1973), which was not distributed in circulation.
