Stack's Bowers September 2025 Collectors Choice Online Auction, lot 76185

This specimen was lot 76185 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1000 Rupees, 2010-M. Mumbai Mint. NGC PROOF-67 Ultra Cameo. Struck to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of Brihadeeswarar Temple." Wikipedia notes,

"Brihadisvara Temple, called Rajarajesvaram (lit. 'Lord of Rajaraja') by its builder...is a Shaivite Hindu temple built in a Chola architectural style located on the south bank of the Cauvery river in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the largest Hindu temples and an exemplar of Tamil architecture."

The proof shown here is marked with an "M" for Mumbai; the circulation issue was stamped with a diamond. This is the first issue of this denomination and was accompanied by a five rupees (KM 378). As of November 2025, ₹1,000 = US$11.27.

Recorded mintage: 16,540 (mintmarked "♦") plus 24,007 proofs (mintmarked "M").

Specification: 35 g, 0.800 fine silver, 44 mm diameter, reeded edge.
