Stephen Album sale 50, lot 2824

This specimen was lot 2824 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA: Republic, AR 50 rupees, 2001, KM-310, 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Dr. Syama P. Mookerjee, some hairlines, rare type, UNC, R." This denomination has been used solely for commemoratives, many of them quite scarce, suggesting that they were never offered for sale to the public. Wikipedia comments,

"Syama Prasad Mookerjee (1901-53) was an Indian politician and academician. Noted for his opposition to [the] Quit India movement, he later served as India's first Minister for Industry and Supply in Nehru's cabinet after breaking up with the Hindu Mahasabha. After falling out with Nehru, Mukherjee resigned from Nehru's cabinet. ...He founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the predecessor to the Bharatiya Janata Party, in 1951."
