Stephen Album sale 50, lot 2822

This specimen was lot 2822 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA: Republic, 50 rupees, 1997, Subhas Chandra Bose, hairlined, very rare type, Proof, RR." This denomination has been used solely for commemoratives, many of them quite scarce, suggesting that they were never offered for sale to the public. Wikipedia comments,

"Subhas Chandra Bose, 1897-1945, was an Indian nationalist who served as the President of Azad Hind. His defiance of British authority in India made him a hero among many Indians, but his wartime alliances with Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan left a legacy vexed by authoritarianism, anti-Semitism, and military failure."

Recorded mintage: unknown plus proofs.

Specification: 30 g, copper-nickel, 39 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-264.
