This specimen was lot 38710 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 4 Anna, 1921-(B). Bombay Mint. George V. NGC VF Details--Environmental Damage." This four annas was struck at the Bombay mint after World War One. A wartime surge in the price of silver prompted the British authorities to replace the silver quarter rupee with this copper-nickel type. It must not have been a success as it was dropped after only three years (1919-21). Likewise, the copper-nickel eight annas was abandoned after 1920.
Recorded mintage: 1,219,100 plus proofs.
Specification: 6.65-6.87 g, copper-nickel, 24 mm diameter, plain edge.
Catalog reference: KM-519; S&W-8.191.
