from the Stack's Bowers 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73042

This specimen was lot 73042 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $65. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/4 Rupee, 1917-(C). Calcutta Mint. NGC MS-63. Some light peripheral toning adds a hint of color to this otherwise blast white, highly lustrous minor." This type was struck 1912-20, 1925-30, 1934, 1936. The Bombay mint did not contribute any in 1917. In the 1950's and 1960's both mints restruck coins of the Raj for sale to collectors; many restrikes may be distinguished by rusty dies.

Recorded mintage: 21,072,000 + restrikes.

Specification: 2.92 g, 0.917 fine silver, 19 mm diameter, reeded edge.
