India 1918(c) 1/4 rupee

from the Mountain Groan Collection

This type was struck 1911-36 in large numbers at Bombay and Calcutta. It is about the size of a dime tho it contained about 12¢ of silver. Both mints remain in operation today, altho in 1918, only Calcutta produced quarter rupees. In the 1950's and 1960's both mints restruck coins of the Raj for sale to collectors; many restrikes may be distinguished by rusty dies.

Recorded mintage: 50,575,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 2.92 g, 0.917 fine silver, .086 troy oz ASW, 19.3-20 mm diameter.
