Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 75119

This specimen was lot 75119 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $145. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/2 Pice, 1897-(C). Calcutta Mint. Victoria. PCGS MS-63 Red Brown. This handsome Choice Mint State example delivers good appeal, with nice red tone remaining throughout." This type was struck 1877-78 and 1885-1901 in moderate quantities and was worth one-eighth of an anna. Calcutta was the sole producer.

Recorded mintage: 8,484,000 plus proofs and restrikes.

Specification: 3.0-3.3 g, copper, 21 mm diameter.
