This specimen was lot 31008 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "British India. Victoria Proof 1/4 Anna 1897-(c) PR64 Red and Brown NGC, Calcutta mint. Remarkably fresh, reddish brown surfaces with underlying golden highlights and crisp intricate detail. A rare offering as this is currently the only known certified example of this date in a Proof classification." This type was struck at Calcutta 1877-1901 and at Bombay 1877-89 and is common.
Recorded mintage: 82,288,000 plus proofs and restrikes.
