India 1893-C 1/4 rupee
The first specimen was lot 71836 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $70. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/4 Rupee, 1893-(C). Calcutta Mint. Victoria. PCGS AU-50 Gold Shield. Scarcely encountered finer, this wholesome example presents a deep gray tone and problem-free, lightly handled surfaces." The second specimen was lot 71653 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[2] noted, "INDIA. 1/4 Rupee, 1893-C. Calcutta Mint. Victoria. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. A well struck coin with pleasing, original surfaces and dusty gray toning." This is a common date of a type struck 1877-1901. For this date, the mintmark, found on the lower lotus flower, is incuse.
