This specimen was lot 54131 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $5,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/4 Anna, 1890-(C). Calcutta Mint. Victoria. NGC PROOF-64 Brown. A RARE original Proof issue, displaying the characteristic squared-off rims, soft luster, and lack of die rust. On the whole an appealing chocolate-brown, with areas of original reddish copper color exhibited throughout the reverse fields." This type was struck at Calcutta 1877-1901 and at Bombay 1877-89 and is common. This specimen sold for five times the catalog value for a proof.
