This specimen was lot 45083 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. British India. 1/4 Anna, 1882-C. Calcutta Mint. Victoria. PCGS MS-64 Brown Gold Shield. A gorgeous coin with sharp strike, satiny luster, and dramatic magenta to cobalt toning on both sides." This type was struck at Calcutta 1877-1901 and at Bombay 1877-89 and is common. We don't know why this example realized nine times the catalog value. It had a face value of 1/64 of a rupee.
Recorded mintage: 43,164,000 plus a few proofs.
