Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 56540

This specimen was lot 56540 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/12 Anna, 1878-(C). Calcutta Mint. Victoria. PCGS MS-63 Brown." This type was issued at Calcutta and Bombay 1877-1901 in a bewildering array of varieties, including proofs, off-metal strikes and restrikes. The type is the smallest copper denomination, worth 1/192 rupee. It is distinguished from the type issued 1862-76 by the obverse legend, "VICTORIA EMPRESS" instead of "VICTORIA QUEEN."

Recorded mintage: 5,525,000 plus proofs, a common date. None were struck at Bombay in 1878.
