India 1876(c) 1/12 anna
This specimen was lot 74330 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. 1/12 Anna, 1876-(C). Calcutta Mint. Victoria. PCGS MS-64 Red Brown. This attractive near-Gem minor offers surfaces nearly fully coated in mint red and showy luster that is uninhibited by any sign of handling and only limited contact." This type was issued at Calcutta and Bombay 1862 and 1874-76 in a bewildering array of varieties, including proofs, off-metal strikes and restrikes. The type is the smallest copper denomination, worth 1/192 rupee. It is distinguished from the type issued 1877-1901 by the obverse legend, "VICTORIA QUEEN" instead of "VICTORIA EMPRESS."
