India 1876(b) rupee
This specimen was lot 72589 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Rupee, 1876-(B). Bombay Mint. Victoria. NGC MS-62. This nice Mint State example offers a pleasing charm and most beautiful details." This type was issued at Calcutta and Bombay 1874-76 in a bewildering array of varieties, including proofs, off-metal strikes and restrikes. The type is the largest silver denomination. This date comes with a dot for a mintmark. The Calcutta mint added another 12,001,000 in 1876. In 1877, the obverse legend was revised to read, "VICTORIA EMPRESS".
