CNG Lissner sale, lot 504

This specimen was lot 504 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,452. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA, Colonial. British India. Victoria. 1837-1901. AR Rupee. East India Company issue. Type I, “English” head. Bombay mint. Dated 1840. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 65. Gem uncirculated with battleship gray toning accentuated by waves of rainbow on the reverse. Purchased from World-Wide Coins of California, November 1976." Two major types exist; the first, with "VICTORIA QUEEN" in a interrupted legend (shown here), and the second, with a continuous legend (KM 458). The East India Company was dissolved and its assets taken over by the British government after the Mutiny of 1857, at which point the issue of this coin was likely terminated.
