Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73594
SB223-73594r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73594 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "HUNGARY. 10 Kreuzer, 1877-KB. Kremnica Mint. Franz Joseph I. PCGS MS-63. A dazzling and enticing minor that may be a bit conservatively graded. Showcasing a light gray nature to argent surfaces, a slight champagne hue is present throughout. The strike is full, and intriguingly the portrait of the emperor is boldly clashed on the reverse die. Quite a SCARCE later date and sure to draw specialist attention." This type was issued 1870-77 and 1887-88 from the Kremnitz (Komoczbanya in Magyar) mint during the reign of Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria-Hungary. It superseded a similar type with the "B" mintmark struck until 1867. After the reorganization of the Hapsburg empire into the Dual Monarchy in 1867, Hungary received her own coinage separate from Austrian issues. In the aftermath of World War One, the Hapsburg monarchy collapsed and Hungary became independent but without its former territories in Slovakia, Transylvania and Croatia.

Recorded mintage: 460,077.

Specification: 1.66 g, 0.400 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-451.1.
