Hungary 1706-CH thaler Dav-1022
This specimen was lot 3276 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 9,000 CHF (about US$11,305 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"UNGARN, Joseph I. 1705-1711 Taler 1706. Pressburg. Selten. Sehr schön-gutes sehr schön. (kingdom of Hungary, Joseph I (1705-11), thaler of 1706, Pressburg mint, rare, very fine to good very fine.)"
This type, struck 1705-11 in several varieties, is rare. Hungary in 1706 had been freshly reconquered by the Austrians from the Turks but was not part of the Empire. This period (1704-11) is marked by the rebellion of the Hungarian nobility under Franz Rakoczy.
