Jean Elsen sale 106, lot 774
Austria 1610 Kremnitz thaler rev JElsen 106-774.jpg

This specimen was lot 772 in Jean Elsen sale 106 (Brussels, September 2010), where it sold for 140 euro. The catalog description[1] noted,

"SAINT EMPIRE, Matthias II (1608-1619), AR Taler, 1610 KB, Kremnitz. Type hongrois. Droit : B. couronné, drapé et cuirassé à droite, portant le collier de la Toison d'or. Revers : Ecu couronné de Hongrie-Bohême-Dalmatie-Croatie, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Rare. Belle patine. presque Superbe." (Holy Roman Empire, Matthias II (1608-19), silver thaler of 1610, Kremnitz mint, Hungarian type. Obverse: crowned, draped and armored bust to right, wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned arms of Hungary/Bohemia/Dalmatia/Croatia, surrounded by the Golden Fleece. Rare, nice patina, almost Extremely Fine.)

The SCWC correctly catalogs this under Hungary, not Austria. Hungary in 1610 was partitioned between the Austrians and the Turks and was not part of the Empire. This type was struck 1609-12.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28,17 g.
