Hungary 1506 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 1769 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 12,000 CHF (about US$14,566 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"UNGARN. Wladislaus II. 1490-1516. 1/2 Taler 1506, Kremnitz. Gekröntes Wappen, zu den Seiten ° KREMIZ ° - ° TVRSO ° Rv. Der hl. Ladislaus im Harnisch reitet nach links mit Lanze in der erhobenen Rechten, umher Verzierung, in der Umschrift Madonna mit Kind auf Mondsichel. Sehr selten. Gutes vorzüglich. Hübsche Patina. (kingdom of Hungary, Ladislas II, 1490-1516, half thaler of 1506, Kremnitz mint. Obverse: crowned arms; reverse: armored St. Ladislas with lance. Very rare, Good extremely fine, Attractively toned.)"
Wladislaus was also king of Bohemia and Croatia. Wladislaus' successor Lajos II was killed in 1526 fighting the Turks at Mohacs, ending Hungarian independence. A similar 1½ thaler also exists.
