Sincona sale 1, lot 2377

This specimen is lot 2377 in SINCONA sale 1 (Zürich, June 2011), where it sold for 1800 CHF (about US$2,506 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"UNGARN Wladislaus II. 1490-1516. Goldgulden 1515, Hermannstadt. Madonna mit Kind, darunter kleines Wappen. Rv. Der geharnischte, stehende hl. Ladislaus mit Streitaxt und Reichsapfel zwischen Mzz. Vorzüglich. (Hungary, Ladislas II, 1490-1516, goldgulden of 1515, Hermannstadt mint. Obverse: Madonna and Child, small shield below. Reverse: Armored standing figure of St. Ladislas holding sword and orb between mintmark. Extremely Fine.)"

Friedberg lists this type for 1503-17 and notes it as among the more available of Hungarian gold coins. Ladislaus was also king of Bohemia and Croatia. Ladislaus' successor Lajos II was killed in 1526 fighting the Turks at Mohacs, ending Hungarian independence.
