Honduras 1908/888 5 pesos
This specimen was lot 20472 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "HONDURAS. 5 Pesos, 1908/888. Tegucigalpa Mint. NGC EF-45. An overdate issue, this rather RARE type exhibits only a light degree of handling and circulation, and maintains a solid degree of underlying luster and radiance. Ex: Eliasberg Collection (American Numismatic Rarities, 4/2005) Lot # 3080. Ex: John H. Clapp Collection." This type was issued irregularly 1883-1913 but never in large quantities. Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere and it is unlikely the government ever had access to much bullion.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 8.06 g, 0.900 fine gold.
