from the Stack's Bowers 2017 ANA sale, lot 21055
Honduras SB517-21055r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21055 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $14,100. The catalog description[1] noted, "Tied for Finest Certified 1897 5 Pesos. HONDURAS. 5 Pesos, 1897 (9/8). NGC MS-64. EXTREMELY RARE date and tied for finest certified with only two other examples. Less than a handful of specimens are known to exist. Sharply struck with good definition of the fine details and lovely satiny surfaces. Truly an excellent example and though graded the same as the Louis E. Eliasberg specimen the present piece has far better eye appeal, strike and without any spots or uneven toning. Clearly an example that is well preserved and was undisturbed for many years. Highly desirable and with a fabulous provenance. From the Richard Stuart Collection." This type was issued irregularly 1883-1913 but never in large quantities. Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere and it is unlikely the government ever had access to much bullion.

Recorded mintage: unknown but few.

Specification: 8.064 g, 0.900 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-6; KM-53.
