Honduras 1907 centavo KM-59
The first specimen was lot 72549 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "HONDURAS. Centavo, 1907. Tegucigalpa Mint. PCGS MS-63 Brown. Small 'UN' variety Pinkish hues dominate the lustrous surfaces of this appealing piece. Noticeable traces of mint red surround the legends, adding visual interest that is not often seen on Brown coins. Worthy of its status as the sole finest known in the PCGS population report." The second specimen was lot 1383 in Sedwick sale 34 (Winter Park, FL, November 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[2] noted, "Honduras, bronze 1 centavo, 1907, large UN, plain edge, NGC MS 62 Brown. Even brown color all over with slight hints of golden luster on reverse, all details weakly struck as usual (the reverse modified from an earlier 10c die) but without wear or marks, appears as 'top pop' in the NGC census without variety but ranks lower than others of this 'large UN' variety." This type, with "* PAZ * PROGRESO * I * LIBERTAD *" outside the wreath, was struck 1890, 1893, 1895 and 1907-08 and is common in circulated condition. The reverse die is obviously recycled from an older ten centavos die. Another centavo, with no motto on the reverse (KM 46), was struck 1881, 1884-85, 1889-90, 1896-1904 and 1907. Both types were made from recycled dies, so overdates, reengraved figures and damaged dies (cracks, cuds, etc.) are typical.
Recorded mintage: 234,000 (all varieties).
Specification: 4.5 g, bronze, 20 mm diameter.
