Holland 1796 ducat Fr-318a
This specimen was lot 2822 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 3,200 CHF (about US$3,884 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"THE NETHERLANDS | Batavische Republik. Dukat 1796, Enkhuizen. Variante mit Stern (HOL *). Sehr seltene Variante. PCGS MS62. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (Netherlands, Batavian Republic, ducat of 1796, Enkhuizen mint, variety with a star after "HOL". Very rare variety, Extraordinary condition, uncirculated.)"
This type is identical in every respect to the ducats struck by the province of Holland until 1792 but is an issue of the Batavian Republic, a puppet state of the French Republic. The Holland ducat without star (Fr-318, Dordrecht mint) was struck 1795-1805 and with star (Fr-318a, Enkhuizen mint, shown here) 1796-97 and 1800-02.
Recorded mintage: 630,455 with star and 2,861,825 without star for 1795-1805; this is a rare date.
