Jean Elsen sale 156, lot 1761

This specimen was lot 1761 in Jean Elsen sale 156 (Brussels, September 2023), where it sold for €280 (about US$359 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, De Bataafse Republiek (1795-1806), AV dukaat met de ridder, 1795, Holland. Vz/ Staande ridder n.r. met zwaard en pijlenbundel. Kz/ Tekst in versierd vierkant. Krasjes en montagesporen. Zeer Fraai à Prachtig. (Netherlands, Batavian Republic, 1795-1806, gold "knight's" ducat of 1795, Holland mint. Obverse: standing knight with sword and bundle of arrows; reverse: text in tablet. Traces of a mount mark, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This type is identical in every respect to the ducats struck by the province of Holland until 1792 but is an issue of the Batavian Republic, a puppet state of the French Republic. The Holland ducat without star (Fr-318, Dordrecht mint, shown here) was struck 1795-1805 and with star (Fr-318a, Enkhuizen mint) 1796-97 and 1800-02.
