Holland 1783 6 stuivers
This specimen was lot 884 in Jean Elsen price list 258 (Brussels, October 2011) where it was offered for €1,850 (about US$2,584). The catalog description noted,
"NEDERLAND, HOLLAND, Provincie, AV scheepjesschelling, 1783, Gouden afslag op gewicht van een dubbele dukaat. Droit : Driemaster varend nue radié. Revers : Gekroond Hollands wapen. Zeldzaam. Prachtig. (Netherlands, province of Holland, gold ship shilling of 1783 struck on a blank for a double ducat. Obverse: three masted ship under full sail; reverse: crowned arms of Holland. Rare, extremely fine.)"
This six stuivers or "ship shilling" was struck in the Dutch provinces throughout the eighteenth century. The regular silver issue ended in Holland in 1767 but continued in gold until 1794, being struck on double ducat blanks.
