Holland 1775 ducaton Dav-1827
The first specimen was lot 30222 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $1,703.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Holland. Provincial Ducaton (Silver Rider) 1775 MS62 NGC. A broad and pleasing specimen featuring the emblematic motif of an armored knight on horseback with crowned arms below. This well-preserved example presents an excellent strike and surfaces that are lightly canvassed in a champagne patina. Most interesting and highly-collectible in this Mint State designation." The second specimen was lot 1097 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it sold for $352.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES: AR ducaton, 1767, Holland silver rider (zilveren rijder), contemporary imitation with retrograde reverse including the date 1767, correct obverse, but blundered reverse legends, with two banker's marks (crescent & swastika), struck in good silver with excellent die work, likely produced in East Asia by Chinese merchants, VF, R." The SCWC notes that the regular issues from Holland run 1672-94, 1716-21 and 1734-93.
