Holland 1576 daalder Dav-8838
The first specimen was lot 2673 in Sincona sale 13 (Zürich, October 2013), where it sold for 140 CHF (about US$181 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Holland, Provinz, Löwentaler 1576. Sehr schön-vorzüglich (Netherlands, province of Holland, lion dollar of 1576. Very fine to extremely fine)."
The second specimen was lot 71748 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[2] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Holland. Lion Daalder, 1576. NGC AU-53. Boldly struck with even wear, this wholesome looking example displays light attractive and is pleasing to the eye." The third specimen was lot 74150 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[3] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Holland. Liondaalder, 1576. NGC EF-40. A bold example, with rich and deep toning throughout and a strongly struck lion. A piece that exudes beauty and charm, and one that is certain to capture the attention of all looking for a strong example of the type." The SCWC lists a similar type (KM 11) for 1601-05. "Lion" daalders were struck in Holland and other Dutch provinces until 1697 but are seldom seen, especially well struck like this example. Simultaneous with the Lion daalder (40 stuivers) was the "prince" daalder (50 stuivers), the silver ducat (48 stuivers), the three gulden (57 stuivers) and the ducaton (silver rider or 60 stuivers). The catalog does not explain why so many different large silver coins were felt to be necessary.
