Stack's Bowers November 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 78475

This specimen was lot 78475 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2025), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPANISH NETHERLANDS. Holland. 1/5 Daalder, 1571. Dordrecht Mint. Philip II. PCGS AU-50. From the Richard August Collection." This scarce type was struck in Holland 1567, 1571-72, 1580 and undated. It was part of an early experiment with decimal coinage and was accompanied by 1/20 and 1/10 daalders. We have similar examples from Gelderland, Overijssel, Brabant, Flanders, Hainaut and Artois.

Specification: 6.85 g, 0.833 fine silver, 29-30 mm diameter.
