This specimen was lot 1039 in Schulman sale 375 (Amsterdam, April 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLLAND Provincie 1581 - 1795, Leeuwendaalder. z.j. (1575). Type Ia. Ridder achter provinciewapen naar links MO· NO· ARG· – ORDIN· HOLL·. Kz. klimmende leeuw, mmt. ❀ in omschrift. RRRR. Van de allerhoogste zeldzaamheid en van historisch belang!. Enkele krassen en vondstaanslag. Bijna fraai. Dit is de allereerste autonome munt van de vrije Nederlanden. Wij hebben sinds 1880 slechts twee andere exemplaren mogen verhandelen. Eén daarvan is nu in handen van de Nederlandse Bank. (province of Holland, undated lion dollar, circa 1575, type Ia. Obverse: knight facing left, supporting the provincial arms; reverse: lion rampant left. Of the utmost rarity and historical importance! Some scratches and planchet flaws. About fine. This is the very first autonomous currency of the free Netherlands. We have only been able to trace two other examples since 1880. One of these is now owned by the Dutch Bank.)"

This type was struck 1575-76 and undated. It varies from the later type in having the knight's head facing left instead of right. Leeuwendaalders were struck in most of the provinces until about 1700. At this point, Holland was still technically part of the Spanish Netherlands but had one foot out the door.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.63 g, 0.750 fine silver, this specimen 26.26 g.
