Hesse 1904 5 mark

Heritage sale 3020, lot 23882

This specimen was lot 23882 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description^[2] noted, "Hesse-Darmstadt. Ernst Ludwig 5 Mark 1904, Proof 65 PCGS, colorful russet and magenta patina, a choice original example of this commemorative marking the 400th birthday of Phillip the Magnanimous. Proofs of this type are matte on the obverse with mirror surfaces on the reverse." This five mark piece was issued from the Berlin mint for the grand duke in 1904. This type is rather scarce. There is also a two mark (KM 372) which is much more common.

Recorded mintage: 40,000 plus 700 proofs.

Specification: 27.77 g, 0.900 fine silver, 38 mm diameter.
