Sincona sale 22, lot 1452

This specimen was lot 1452 in Sincona sale 22 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 120 CHF (about US$151 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Hessen-Darmstadt, ab 1806 Grossherzogtum, Ludwig III. 1848-1877 Vereinstaler 1860. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (grand duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt, Louis III (1848-77), union thaler of 1860, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The grand duke of Hesse-Darmstadt dropped the "-Darmstadt" from his title when Hesse-Cassel was annexed by Prussia in 1866. This type was struck in substantial numbers 1857-71 yet is rather expensive.
