This specimen was lot 75049 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hesse-Darmstadt. Taler, 1862. Ludwig III. PCGS MS-63. A delightful example in Choice Mint State, offering brilliant luster encircling the crisp portrait and devices." The grand duke of Hesse-Darmstadt dropped the "-Darmstadt" from his title when Hesse-Cassel was annexed by Prussia in 1866. This type was struck in substantial numbers 1857-71 yet is rather expensive.
